Gemmological Properties of Ammolite
TECHNICAL DATA
Mineral Type: Aragonite
Chemical Composition: Calcium Carbonate with 3 to 4% trace minerals
Refractive Index: 1.52 to 1.67
Specific Gravity: 2.8 to 3.05
Hardness: 4 to 4.5
Spinel Cap Hardness: 8
Crystal Structure: Orthorhombic.
Cleavage: Pinacoidal.
Luster: Vitreous to Resinous
Care and Maintenance:
Clean with mild soap and water, or a commercial pearl cleaner. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided. The lightly acid solution used in them can attack the surface of a natural stone, and stress the layers in a triplet. Steam cleaning should also be avoided. With proper care, an ammolite stone will last indefinitely.
