Frequently Asked Questions
What is ammolite?
Ammolite is the gemstone derived from the ammonite fossil.
Where is ammolite found?
Gem ammolite is only found in a small area of Southern Alberta in Canada.
How is ammolite formed?
Ammolite is formed through the fossilization and mineralization process of the ammonite shell.
Is ammolite a gemstone?
Ammolite was officially recognized as a gemstone in 1981, by the CIBJO International Commission of Coloured Gemstones.
How old is the ammolite gemstone?
It is estimated to be at least 65 to 70 million years old.
How many mines are there?
The ammonite deposit is broken into many claims, which are granted to separate individuals or companies. The famous Korite mine (which has operated in several locations), remains the longest standing and most successful operation, however, they have recently mined out their current property, and are expected to move to a site adjacent to ours. While several myths abound, perpetrated both by parties who own mines, and those who don't, the fact is that the Korite mine, and the Aurora mine are the only two producing ammolite mines in the world.
Other mining operations have come and gone, and for one reason or another, have not proven viable. So, while you may hear other names dropped, these mines do not actually exist.
Are there other sources of ammolite?
The Blood Indians have surface collected ammolite for many years on their lands along the rivers which cut through the deposit. There have also been surface collection permits granted to individuals by the government, although in recent years, there has been a moratorium placed on these permits, mainly because of numerous management and enforcement problems, and by now they have expired. Since all the deposits are claimed, there is virtually nowhere for hobbyists and rockhounds to pick.
Is it expensive?
Considering the rarity of the deposit, and the difficulty and expense of extracting it by mechanical means, ammolite is probably undervalued.
What should I know before buying my ammolite?
Ammolite is not an easy material to fashion into gemstones. Unless the proper techniques are utilized, there is a risk that the stone will not withstand the test of time. Therefore it is a good idea to deal with reputable companies, and be wary of over-inflated boasts by companies and individuals who don't have the knowledge or expertise to manufacture a consistent, high quality product. When every piece is claimed to be "AA", or "top quality", that should be a hint that you may not be getting the true story.
Are there export controls on ammolite?
Ammonite fossils require an export permit from the Canadian government, however, jewellery and gemstones do not.
